The GlenKarra vineyard is one of the most spectacular in Australia. Perched at the top of a valley in the Pyrenees ranges near the small town of Elmhurst - it was planted in the 1980's by two legends of the wine industry (Ian Home, the founder of Yellowglen and Leo Hurley). Since 2009 the vineyard has been dry grown (not irrigation) leading to the creation of a small crop of intensely flavoured fruit each year.
In 2018 I was lucky enough to be offered a small parcel of Shiraz from the vineyard in return for some consultancy work I had done. What a privilege and a pleasure to make!
The first thing you notice about the wine is the amazing colour - a vibrant black/purple. The aromas are of blueberry, sandalwood and plum. These key site characters follow through on the flavour which is rich and generous but at the same time has lovely balancing tannins.
This wine will generously repay 3 to 10 years of bottle maturation.
